You
still need a dgree to land a good job, say

BRITAIN’S top
businesses would like to see more graduates
entering the job market, not fewer, according to a
survey for The Times.
As more than 300,000 applicants are
accepted on degree courses today, marking a record
year, members of the Institute of Directors have
insisted that a degree is a prerequisite for a
good job. The study appears to quash fears of
a graduate glut in the job market as the number of
young people entering university nears the
Government’s target of 50 per cent by 2010, and
students face deferred top-up fees of £3,000 for
the first time. Over the past 40 years the numbers
at university have increased steadily, from about
400,000 in 1963 to about two million today.
According to institute members, the larger the
business, the more graduates are needed.

Culture is a thin but very important
veneer that you must be careful not to scratch.
People from different cultures are basically the
same and respond in the same way. However, make
sure that you understand their basic customs and
show an interest and willingness to learn the

Today, more than ever business success requires
intercultural awareness and effective cross
cultural communication skills. Working, meeting,
dealing, entertaining, negotiating and
corresponding with colleagues or clients from
different cultures can be a minefield. One wrong
movement or basic misunderstanding could ruin or
delay months of work. Understanding and
appreciating intercultural differences ultimately
promotes clearer communication, breaks down
barriers, builds trust, strengthens relationships,
opens horizons and yields tangible results in
terms of business success. Fact: Today's manager
increasingly has to work in international and
cross cultural environments. In addition to the
normal pressures of man-management, managers are
now required to deal with challenges, friction and
misunderstandings emanating from cross cultural
differences. Effective management in the modern
environment necessitates cross cultural competency
in order to get the best out of a multicultural
team.
